TRAFFIC TO THE WEBSITE OR TACKY?

I posted a link to a mommy blog in my side bar on Retire In Style...I love the html picture she allows bloggers to use and she makes me laugh every time. Funny to the core! When it comes to the ratio of traffic to website to profanity she is the master.  She can brag 333 followers on Google. Most blogger are craving the kind of exposure that she gets. Still I wonder Would she be as funny and popular if she did not use the "f" word?

There are a few given facts about being high on Google search list and one of them is traffic...you really have to get people to visit. Otherwise you are talking to yourself. The second given is there is power in the use of a expletive or a derogatory term in the title. While Google frowns on it, people will come flocking from miles around if you include those type of words...go figure. However, if you are really good, relevant, and funny or informative, being controversial becomes less important. Or at least that is what I believe. So do bloggers do it because they think it is expected or has the use of expletives/derogatory terms become so mainstream that there are only a few that are startled when they appears...over and over!

I suppose those people that study the changing patterns in language, expecially those select previously objectionable words, know what words don't raise a red flag any more. I respect their opinions. But I am a teacher and I am what most people would consider OLD! My generation gap is showing. I do not even say the "f" word but I have friends that do in jest! I really never want to start because once I start I will not be able to stop...I can cuss but I try to remain lady like on some level. Oops, my generation gap is showing again.

The question still remains...would this blogger be as popular if she did not go off like a fire cracker on every blog? I don't know. I will continue to read her...she makes me laugh and I am not going to be the "web cussing police". In fact, I know that I will get used to it and not even notice after a while. Still, I was just wondering!!!

So what do you think?

Hi, sirrot - I definitely think you are right here. I occasionally use it when extremely provoked but I think it's somewhat childish to use it repeatedly. Perhaps it's used for emphasis instead of using rows of exclamation marks? Or perhaps it's just a lack of vocabulary?

I think the main thing here is the humour. Stick with it for the laughs ... or until you just can't stand the 'f's'.

All the best

A thought-provoking topic, particularly now, when bad language is so pervasive it's like filler (between the real ideas). I'm giving you a thumbs up for making us think. Thank you very much!

It may get traffic...but will it be the sort of traffic that makes it worth the price?

Personally, I'm perfectly capable of cussing under the right circumstances. But enough is enough. Standup comedians (with notable exceptions) use the "F" word constantly, and I guess that's good for them--even expected. Even so, I had to switch from the Comedy Channel just last night (and I LOVE good standup) because the bleeps were just to frequent to allow for enjoyment of the actual jokes.

Content over cursing, is all I'm saying....

I tend to curse when speaking (in the correct situations of course) but I don't generally do it in anything I write,... other than personal messages.

I generally don't enjoy reading it either.

De Greek...you made me laugh. I don't care...I was just wondering if it drew traffic or if their traffic would drop if that person took the words out. What do you think????

Actually, your generation gap may be showing, but it's really a part of a huge chasm that millions of others are a part of... we are still the most influential age-group because there are so many of us. And there are millions of us on the Internet. So feel free to express yourself with some abandon... I'm willing to bet that there are many, many people who are pretty tired of hearing/seeing the "f" word used with such monotonous frequency-- in fact, most 'cuss words' have lost their power to surprise and have begun to grate upon the ear, as well they should. I am a Christian so I, in my old age, get how Jesus explained that what comes out of our mouths is that which fills our hearts. Many people, Christian or not, declare how much more uplifting and self-motivating it is to focus upon being positive and eschewing all negativity. Cuss words are NOT positively enhancing by any stretch of the imagination... thanks for the thought-provoking post! ~Cynthia

techygran...I will have to agree with you. Standards for behavior are very much still in style though. I wear my "generation gap" with pride! I am not that knowledgable about religions from throughout the world but I would imagine that most people that worship a god are told that profanity is not acceptable. It is not mine to judge but I know they still grate upon my ears!
