Reading for Exercise

My vision is not good...in fact I suppose it could be classifies as very poor. I wear prescription glasses for just getting up in the morning. Tasks like needle work or computer use will find me searching for a second pair of glasses so that I can see to complete the task. Reading a book for any length of time is not possible even with the reading glasses. Eye fatigue will win in the end...always! Because of these problems I found my world shrinking each and every day. I knew that something had to be done if I were to live a long and healthy life. I might add here that eventually I will have cataract surgery. But in the mean time and maybe even after surgery, I needed to do something to help me read.

I had planned on buying a Kindle in the future sometime but I was "waiting" until I had earned enough money online to pay for it. That was my goal. Then I was giving the chance to trade my old iphone for a used Kindle. I jumped at the chance.

Let me say this...I know and you know that if we are to remain mentally healthy in the future we need to use our minds. If we don't, very much like the muscles in our legs when we sit endlessly, our brain will become lazy. The doors to knowledge may get stuck shut forever. If this is true then working our mind becomes very, very important. Reading is not only fun it is necessary!

After the Kindle became mine I began ordering a book here and a book there. Normally the cost for books is around $9.99. If a book has lost it's copyrights, it may be free. There is a very long list of free books.

The first thing I noticed was the ease of reading. I found that I could read for hours at a time. Because the font on the page could be enlarged to be the size that fit my needs, I did not suffer from eye strain. I discovered that my attention span was increased a great deal because the eye strain was not making me sleepy or restless. The Kindle has so many wonderful features for helping older people stay in touch with the world I cannot begin to list them. Just the ability to have the device read the book aloud to you in addition to owning the printed version is a miracle.

I began to wonder how vision and it's loss is relevant to our minds elasticity. Does the ability to read increase the activity in our brain? In an article that connected the reading Shakespeare and brain activity that appeared on a website called Physorg.com they seemed to say that it does...at least when you are reading the bard.

Shakespeare uses a linguistic technique known as functional shift that involves, for example using a noun to serve as a verb. Researchers found that this technique allows the brain to understand what a word means before it understands the function of the word within a sentence. This process causes a sudden peak in brain activity and forces the brain to work backwards in order to fully understand what Shakespeare is trying to say.

I cannot even remember why I hesitate to buy the Kindle or a device that would do the same things for me...if I had realized it was not a frivolous desire but in fact a important tool for remaining mentally sharp, I would have bought the very first version that appeared on the market. Now I know we only need to begin thinking outside the box. In fact a Kindle for your aging parents or friends could be a perfect tool to help them stay in touch with the world. Prices have dropped a great deal making them affordable.

It may be that the computer/wireless devices youngsters first used for playing games will be the tools that keeps us going mentally for more years than we ever imagined.
