A Visit to the Gardens

It's a beautiful August afternoon in Portland and I have one ticket to the Japanese Gardens. My husband suggests we use it today! Only one ticket to buy and heaven awaits.   How could anything be more perfect?

If the day you visit has perfect light it can only be a bonus. I have been told that photography is better on a partly cloudy day but I will never complain if the sun is shining as it was on this day. I have chosen a number of photographs for you...but better yet, go see for yourself. This is nature's tranquility at it's best.

How To Get There

I feel almost foolish telling you how to find this oasis...if you are from Portland I can't imagine you don't know. Just in case...as you travel east or west on Highway 26 you take the Zoo, Washington Park exit and follow the signs. Parking a available near the gardens. You can also take the Max Line toward the west hills and get off the train at the Zoo stop. It is a short walk up the hill to the gardens. If you are not able to walk a bus is available too.   Bring an umbrella if it is raining but please don't stay home. I think this place must be almost magic in the rain.

If you are in a wheel chair there may be some barriers. I would suggest you call the gardens for information. More information:

Nothing can Compare

I have walked through gardens in China including those inside the forbidden city in Beijing. While China is not Japan, I still have the feeling that nothing I will ever see can be better than this place. The claim is that these are the best and most authentic gardens outside of Japan. I can certainly believe it!

Great photos. I assume you took them? The word "Serene" seems to suit.

Yes this truly is an amazing place. I took the pictures with my old digital camera that still works great. Can you just imagine what this place would look like in the spring or fall...it is very green now. It is so hard to get good photographs.

Thank you for your comments.
